  • Old Pulteney

I drink Balvenie Portwood with my Saturday cigar. However I like to try other Whiskies with my Wednesday cigar.

A couple of weeks ago I thought I'd give Old Pulteney 12 year old a go, since I'd heard good things about it.

I bought it here, at the Whisky Exchange,

For a ?27 Scotch this is a bargain. It's got a great smooth taste to it, and warms the cockles of me heart. I don't detect a strong salty taste at all, perhaps a little but nothing that I wouldn't have detected without reading reviews beforehand then looking for it actively on tasting.

Downside? As stated in other reviews it has a weak finish. However this is a 12yr old ?27 Scotch we're talking about! If that finish didn't fade and drop off as early as it does then I'd be reviewing a ?100 21yr od Scotch!

This is not a smokey or peaty Scotch, it's quite fruity (in my opinion). So be warned those who like a peaty dram. However at its current price anyone who drinks Scotch on a regular basis is missing out if they pass this gem by.

?20 at Morrison's every so often, so an even bigger bargain. Buy yes Pulteney 12 is well worth trying.

Really nice dram and highly under-rated. Usually a bottle kicking around at either my house, my brother's house or my parent's house.

Have you tried it yet? How different is it from the normal bottling?

Don't let me draw you down the road of 'just a taste', that's how I drank half a bottle of Fettercairn Fasque with my brother last night.

Hope you poured the rest of it down the sink..on second thoughts don't! The caramel colouring & flavouring will probably block your drain up...IMO another poor whisky from that distillery...yuk!

Nice review well said, I just picked up the 17yr and find it for me the best price point in their line up. If you have not had it please do. This distillery up until JM's review on the 21yr topping in 2012(IIRC) flew under the radar here in Canada. Now its much harder to track down.

Aye. Seem to do that a lot. Just ask the Gents here!

Speaking of which, Chris isn't just all cigars and furs! He probably knows enough to rival Marc on Scotch knowledge .
