  • Straight Rye

I was out looking for some Pappy Van Winkle which incidentally is apparently out of stock and proving hard to source due to a massive recent surge in popularity in the US.

anyway while I was at my usual spirits and wine merchant I realised while browsing that I had never tried a straight rye whiskey (as far as I am aware.) so I bought some Pikesville as an introduction. I'm a couple fingers in and while not instantly sold it's definitely growing on me.

I might buy some Rittenhouse and Sazerac next.

Does anyone have much experience/opinion with straight rye?

Oh and I think I'm going to buy some Mellow Corn straight Corn Whiskey too.

Tried this georgiamoon__35752.1348939997.1280.1280.jpg at a really good cocktail bar in Nottingham and it was pretty grim. As you would imagine. The rye was good, though.

They probably have it, they definitely have Georgia Moon which is very similar. I believe these White Dog products are a bit rough, but I guess that's the idea.

Essentially I reckon they are over priced for what they are, completely unaged whiskey.

Incidentally I was planning on buying an Oak barrel and a couple liters of White Dog just to have a crack at ageing my own, but at those prices I may just try to age some cheap Vodka, White Rum or Silver Tequila.

It's the popcorn I want to try only because I watched the program on TV and want to know what it all about

I have a couple of barrels imaged some whiskey in

I done one with sherry and one with port for a month then put a bottle of bells in both for 3 months it was ok but not very subtle

Nice, that's pretty much exactly the setup I was considering. It's got to be worth a try just for the experience!

I understand that at the liquid volumes being discussed the ageing happens pretty quickly as your post suggests.

Willett 4 year single barrel rye....110 proof.....gets you drunk. About 1.5 hours down the road from me (to be honest most of the bourbon distillers are with in 2 hours of me).
