Controversial Pairing

I'm gonna go out there and suggest a pairing that I haven't seen before.

Dutch Genever is the historic origin of English Gin, it's much much less botanical and more malty.... It's not at all in your face and does not fight with the flavour of a cigar what so ever. It does however IMO act as somewhat a seasoning and work someway to intensifying the flavour of a cigar.

It also cleanses the palette between draws and makes a mean alternative to a G&T for the summer months.

I don't suppose anyone else has tried this pairing?

Hey Marc! I like your innovation. It sure pays off to be in engineering and have a mildly chemical/culinary hobby, eh?

I have been known (but don't broadcast it as often) to sip gin during a cigar. I did that yesterday, actually!
My top three common gins that aren't just harsh vodka would be:
1. Botanist - Bruichladdich Islay Gin. Great one. Complex but also expensive. Made by the same famous Islay Single Malters and owned by James McEwan, too.
2. Tanqueray 10. A sublime alternative to the regular 3 gins available at any bar. Tanq 10 remains my cheap drink of choice when at a restaurant.
3. Ungava. An astonishingly cheap, unfiltered gin from the Canadian norths. It has a creamy, lightly viscous feeling that stays on your tongue. It's also yellow. Very good after a lamb shank or a decently fatty meal like Sushi or Offal.

I always try to have these 3 in my bar at all times. I haven't made a gin+tonic with any of them so I can't say what that is like, though.

Gin is my favourite spirit. I don't usually buy anything other than Hendricks though.
I may just give this one a try. For me, the most refreshing way to take gin, is on the rocks with cucumber.
Not sure how that would sit with a cigar though. Maybe I will give it a try this weekend.

It may be mildly misleading for me to liken Genever to Gin, though historically that is where Gin comes from. The main difference to my Knowledge is that while Genever and Gin are both Juniper flavoured spirits, Genever is made from a base spirit of Malt Wine which gives it a warmth of flavour that gin does not have.

There are some amazing gins out there, but Genever is usually much more simple in profile and can easily be sipped neat and in a way lacks the often muddled complexity that makes traditional English Gin so delicious (Brecon is currently my favourite in front of Hendricks and Sipsmith)

Genever really is a totally different spirit that only shares a heretage with Gin.

I strongly suggest that any spirit drinkers at least audition it in their rotation.
