Anyone tried Havana Club Barrel Proof Rum? First time I'd seen it was the weekend but unfortunately buying it wasn't an option. I've tried and emjoyed most of the other Havana Club offerings and wondered how this compares?

It's rare now, discontinued in 2010/2011 when the Seleccion de Maestro was introduced. So the value on the secondary market for it is going up. If you can find it for ?60 or less it's worth a punt, as there'll be people who will pay for that packaging, especially if it has the cardboard outer.Originally posted by RobBooth View PostAnyone tried Havana Club Barrel Proof Rum? It's the same rum as Havana Club Seleccion de Maestro. I know other people have disagreed with this in the past but I've had that confirmed by Pernod Ricard's global brand ambassador for Havana Club and two of the eight Cuban "Maestro Roneros" (Asbel Morales and Salome Carriazo) that Barrel Proof and Seleccion de Maestro is the same rum, just repackaged.

The best rum deal in the world was when a 1 litre bottle of Barrel Proof could be bought in Gib for ?11.20. Those were the days. I didn't even complain too much when the price went up to ?11.70!

That's great info, thanks Ryan. I've got some Seleccion de Maestro but the Barrel Proof was recommended to me, mentioned specifically to get from Stagnetto's but they've never had any when I've visited (it's where I've bought Seleccion) so what you said makes sense. I did see bottles of it a few weeks back and wish I'd gotten a couple now and paid for hold luggage to bring them back. I'll see if they're there next time!

Stagnetto sold out of Barrel Proof in about 2011, it's a long time since I've seen it there. They have a good price on the Seleccion de Maestro though at about ?21 a bottle. Where did you see the Barrel Proof for sale, without mentioning the retailer if you don't want to, but was it Gib?Originally posted by RobBooth View PostThat's great info, thanks @Ryan. Stagnetto's is the cheapest place I've seen it for, I either paid ?19 or ?21 a bottle when I was there in February, can't remember off the top of my head. It was about ?25 IIRC in Cuba and about the same in Andorra. Andorra is where I saw the Barrel Proof.Originally posted by Ryan View PostStagnetto sold out of Barrel Proof in about 2011, it's a long time since I've seen it there. A lot of people I know rate it highly, it was never a favourite Cuban rum of mine though. I always get acetone on the finish but that could be just me. It's worth a go though, I'd imagine it can be found for less than ?30 in the UK.Originally posted by Kickback View PostHavana club 7 is this a nice sipping rum or paint stripper?
Seems to get good reviews.
Havana Club 7 year has become very easily found over the last few years, with a big push from Pernod Ricard.
If you want to try a good aged Cuban rum and you ever get a chance to find any of these I personally rate them all higher than HC7.
