  • Hi from London

    Hi all,

I've been browsing the forums here for a while but thought it about time I introduce myself and get involved. The forums have been an invaluable source of information and advice for me, so thank you!

I started smoking cigars in approximately September 2012. I had been on secondment in New York and, at the end of a deal, was gifted a cigar. I'd never had one before so brought it back to the UK and lit it soon after returning. Despite the nicotine hit (it was a large, colorado maduro cigar, but no idea of brand, etc) I really enjoyed the flavours. Since then, I have quickly slid down the slippery slope...

My first proper cigar experience was smoking a Montecristo No. 4 at the Garden Room at the Lanesborough, which is a beautiful cigar terrace. On reflection, the cigar was average but the experience sublime.

My fiancee went on a trip to Rome last year and I sent her away with a wishlist of singles to purchase from Fincato. She returned with a large selection, including a few Por Larranaga Small Robustos (RE), which I now wish I had asked for a box of (they have an amazing berry sweetness to them)! I also have a couple of La Escepcion Selectos Finos resting in the humidor.

Towards the end of last year I went to Seville with the fiancee and took the opportunity to buy and smoke. After smoking a Trinidad Robusto T, I had to go and buy a 12 count box (which also happened to have a 2010 box code). In addition, I picked up a few Ramon Allones Allones Extra (LE 2011), which I enjoyed, and a few Trinidad Short Robusto T (LE 2010), which I have yet to smoke. I also nabbed the only Por Larranaga Legendarios (RE 2011) I could find, which is resting in the humidor waiting for summer to arrive.

On London cigar terraces, I have been to the cigar room at the Mayfair, which is (based on my experiences so far) second only to the Lanesborough. Whilst there, I had a Hoyo Short Piramides (LE 2011), which was so good that I requested a box for Christmas from the fiancee. I have also been to the Wellesley and the Churchill Bar & Terrace over the last couple of weeks, having a Ramon Allones Specially Selected and Bolivar Royal Corona (Tubos) respectively. The latter was punchy and flavourful and a 10 count box is now on its way. Both were definitely better than the Partagas Serie D No. 4 I smoked on Christmas day, which was peppery but otherwise quite one-dimensional. However, I had a Cohiba Maduro 5 Secretos on New Year's Eve, which made up for it.

    Sam

P.S. I tried the Trinidad Reyes for the first time this weekend, and it convinced me to pull the trigger on a 24 count box. I understand all the hype surrounding them!

I don't frequent cigar terraces often at all (and have only been once to each of the ones mentioned, usually with the fiancee, but I have enjoyed the experiences). It's more the recent cold which limits places where I can enjoy a cigar (no covered area or heating in my garden).

And the moisture Sam, you'll find the outdoor humidity will spoil your smoke. Roll on Spring!

I didn't realise the temperature/humidity you actually smoke in affects the cigar...

Hi and welcome Sam from another North Londoner.

I enjoy the terraces at 10 Manchester street and the Wellesley.

Come the sunshine the Spainyards Inn and Freemasons Arms are good smoking spots near you.

High humidity causes the tobacco to swell and it affects the burn

Makes sense PeeJay, just didn't realise it could have such a quick effect during the course of a smoke.
