  • A hello from Somerset

This seems to be the thing to do and the place to do it I thought I had better say hello.

As you would guess from my username my name is Ben and come from and reside in Somerset.

Being at present a fairly infrequent cigar smoker, I tend to buy my cigars as and when I am going to enjoy one, usually mainstream stuff From Montechristo, Romeo and the like. Because of the way I currently smoke cigars I don't have a humidor for storage or for that matter a cutter as I get it done in store.

So, looking to get these shortly (Xmas pressie to myself) and will probably go with a small humidor and run it with Bovida bags as it appears to be the simplest way for a beginer like myself. As for a cutter, well I am open for suggestions. Quite happy to spend a decent amount assuming you get what you pay as I would like it to do a good job and the blades to retain their edge.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Welcome to the obsession Ben and the slippery slope to being broke! You'll get lots of opinions on here but most of us will recommend a Xikar or Palio cutter.

Welcome Ben. Where in Somerset do you live? I lived in Yeovil for 10 years, my mum is still there.

Welcome Ben! A flurry of advice will follow shortly I assure you! My 2 pence worth, a nice inexpensive desktop humidor will suffice until you know if you have the bug or not and want to start a serious collection. If you do carry on (which I expect you will!) the desktop Humi can still be used alongside a larger unit to house odd singles or a rolling smoke stock.

As for cutters, start out with a cheap basic guillotine cutter and also experiment with a punch. Work out what's best for you, then if you feel like it, but a nice one when you know what you really want.

Enjoy your time here, it's a good place to be!

Welcome, I say don't scrimp On a cutter and just get a Xikar. Relating to a humi, I would be tempted to go 2nd hand on eBay, especially if you can find one that's collection only within your travel distance.

                Welcome

I would agree its not worth getting a cheap cutter (or punch/v-cutter) if you're going to get serious about the hobby, I had a cheap cutter at first and it soon started going blunt and ripping rather than cutting my cigars - it ruined quite a few cigars so in that sense my Xikar Xi1 has paid for itself

Welcome Ben..for what its worth my preference is for a punch. I'll echo what everyone else says welcome to the slippery slope.

                    Hi Ben
Welcome to the forum in my opinion don't be in a rush to buy a cutter, look around plenty to choose from spend the money once on a cutter
you like, like a few have said already you won't go wrong with xikar and the palio.
As for humidors always go a bit bigger than you need you'd be surprised how quickly you cab fill one up once you begin buying.

Hi and welcome to the obsession

A small desktop is always nice to start with, then if you get the bug and a bigger humi you can use the small one for current smokes.

As for cutters, I have tried a few different ones and the two Xikar I have been outstanding.

I tried a punch, for small ring gauge cigars it works well but for big beasties (48+ RG) I found the hole too small and got a lot of tar buildup.
