post counts ruin forums
if i had my way post counts would be invisible
and every post someone makes, they get a small electric shock through they keyboard. or a weasel sneaks in their humi and does a woopsie on their cigars
when i am king, post counters will be first against the wall
Long live King Lascaux.
As has been said, substance, quality, humour etc. Not just single words or worse still single smilies.
Dead easy to rack up the count with "welcome", "yup", "lol", lmao" or but what does it contribute.
Its nice to get your wee cigar from Deano but shame its not possible to count a post as a post only if it has say minimum of 10 words or something.
Otherwise I'm with you Joe, just cos someone's a newbie doesn't mean he's not a wealth of knowledge and likewise someone who joined at the start and only has a few posts may be either shy or be getting all the answers he needs from questions already asked/answered on the forums.
So there you go, this reply may consist of more words than some here with 70 posts, do I give a sh1t? Do you?
I rest Lascaux's case.

For the sake of argument, I will beg to differ on this one. It is no doubt true that those who post least may have the most to say, while those who post most may be saying mostly nothing (and I throw that out there as a logical possibility rather than a knock on any given poster). I'll even admit to posting rather useless things for a number of silly reasons that don't amount to a hill of beans.
On the other hand, I think that there's nothing wrong with any of that really--what harm does it cause? And I'd even go further and argue that it is, all told, a good thing so long as the community is generally respectful of one another, which is happily the case here. Why good? Because, even with a number of short posts, we get a sense of each other by our typed words alone, and the proliferation of posts provides greater detail about who we are, even if that means that one is merely a person who likes to write short, pointless posts for the sake of writing short, pointless posts (sort of like one might have a friend who likes to talk though he/she doesn't end up saying much).
Maybe a good metaphor is to say that posts are the life-blood of this community, without which there'd be little to no life. So I say post on, whatever it is you have to say, so long as you keep it cool.
Ahem....post counts don't ruin forums, bad poster do.
(post no. 3779 )
Hey el Perro! I think it's kinda fun to know one's post count. And as senor King Solomon seyz:"....even with a number of short posts, we get a sense of each other by our typed words alone, and the proliferation of posts provides greater detail about who we are..."
'nuf said.

I'm actually frightened of posting anything now, even a simple "welcome to the forum" or "a great photo" or "a really good review". Apparently one needs a constructive criteria before one posts anything otherwise one loses respect and credibility. Oh dear.
Soulmanure you have me there, everything you say is completely true, water-tight and goodly!
I am certainly not a preacher of "only post meaningful, wonderful prose and let the words roll out of your mouth like silk from the anoos of a silkworm"
Most of my posts are utter shite. Short, without much thought.
My problem at route is idealistic and largely pointless with an easy cure. I object to posting a lot because a forum is another thing in the world that can make a person comfortable and feed their desire to post as a way of feeling comfort, another crutch to help you through the day.
It's like gentle conversation with friends in real life, a form of grooming, and giving comfort.
There is NOTHING wrong with that, there is something very very good in that, but I have to try and push these things of comfort away.
Postcounts are similar to getting the kitchen done, they wreak of mortgages.
Let's build a home!
As an artist, or a particular type of artist this sort of thing is damaging to me. No over dramatification there. You have to be constantly alert of the things that are your crutches. The things you form around you to make the place feel like a womb again.
Forum are places of social grooming foremost, or they turn into them eventually. Ofcourse this place is incredible as a source of information. And some of you who I've met are genuinely wonderful people. But forums scare me like mortgages scare me, like a tidy room scares me!
Already I've spent 20 odd minutes on this when I intended to get my A-string replaced and set out on learning some flamenco soleares and vidalita, the latest song that captures the divine!! Still the day is young,
So the problem is mine and of my priorities!!
Joe, who knew you could be so eloquent. See you Monday?
"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!"
yeah morning to early afternoon
im afraid ill be cigar-embargoed but ill make up for it with coffee, first date with a girl who really relaly doesnt like cigar smoke... have to break her in gently to these things
Obviously forums (or fora... I'm never sure) serve many purposes... Providing information for newcomers and experts alike, a site for debates on the hot topics of the day (both cigar and non-cigar related), and a social community.
Personally, I find the social community aspect of this site to be excellent, and vital to its success. I've been lucky enough to meet many members off-line, but also enjoy conversations with those I have not. For me, this aspect has become equally as important as information. And I certainly wouldn't agree to losing a social side to create an encyclopaedia of a site...
Now, I know that's not really what anyone was suggesting. But the drivel can certainly add to the atmosphere. Even the crazy Mexican...
That doesn't necessarily make post-count-watching a desirable attribute, but allows for tripe to be posted. The post-count is a measure of how much has been contributed to the community, not how good the information was...
