I don't mind the Boli RC and it is a good example, even when young, of where a tube version IS MHO far superior.

No, he was most likely salving the blokes price preconceptions and took an easy way out because he couldn't be bothered explaining the reasoning and decision to tube some vitola or explain why the price difference .... or he just wanted to get to the cantina and his works Culabras.

Because they are possibly not as unpopular as you think. But, it is about marketing in a way, because someone somewhere in Cuban cigar history decided that certain cigars would benefit by being tubed, and in the cases of some vitola they were confident enough to have both untubed and tubed versions.

Like punch royal coronations or Bolivar Royal Coronas?

Seriously though, I was taking what Jeremy's buddy was saying at face value. Do you think the factory manager was winding him up?

We all dream of being more interesting.
But then again, who knows. I'll go home and untube some RYJ tubos and lay them accross.

Maybe they used to do that but no longer. Maybe it started out with fonesca's tin marketing sand then mismatched colours, then this.
After all, if it was always about marketing, why have unpopular marcas tuned? Like punch royal coronations or Bolivar Royal Coronas?
I doubt those even come in 3ers anymore

Correct. Monte Tubos is a Coronas Grandes. Monte 1 is the longer Cervantes. But in-line with Butternut theory, perhaps Monte Tubos are just ugly Monte 1s cut down?

On a side note J, I noticed lately when reading MRN that the Monte 1 and the Monte Tubo are different sizes! For years I've always assumed they're the same but one is slightly longer than the other (can't remember which)

aye. indeed. just checked and my monte 1s don't fit in my monte tubes.....
that's actually pretty strange but ah well.

Tubes have been around for yonks, Louis Fonseca is credited with introducing them back in the 1800s. Initially they were made from tin and were plain. The purpose was to protect and to aid the maturing process.
