  • The Ugly Americano?

So here I am in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for a little R&R with the familia Coro when I decided to enjoy a fine puro on the deck of our unit before turning in. About 45 minutes into it, the americano in the next unit peers over the wall that separates our decks and asked if I smelled a cigar. What a jack-ass! Of course I did!

He then tells me that smoking on the deck was not allowed, but of course he was wrong...and I knew it! I specifically asked if it was okay when I checked in and was told"absolutely." But as I was politely informing him of this, a women from inside the next unit screeches out that they could smell it in their room, which I found interesting since the slight breeze that night was blowing the smoke in the opposite direction.Hmmmm?

I told them that I was almost done, but as I was speaking, the woman barks out again that I should "either put it out or smoke it somewhere else" as she slamed the sliding door shut. So naturally, I finished me puro and went on about my business.

So here's the question: What is it about some people, often americanos, who insist on imposing their will on others when visiting foreign lands? It's Mexico, for christ sake! Put on that stupid sombrero you bought at the gift shop and take a siesta!

The Great Wall that separates the units!

    Perro, el Perro

Haha! There's always one in the crowd. I say f*ck 'em!

Hey El P! What's up with these yanks? It's not like this was the first! You've been enjoying fine puros on the deck for three days now and nobody else complained!

Remember the Alamo! (My response would have been much for colourful were I not at work behind a police gateway)

Haha! I can wait for a more "colorful" response. Right now I'm busy: 1) remembering the alamo, and 2) planing my next herf on the deck! I'm thinking 5 or 6 hombres should do it!

          Three Laws are:
          1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
          2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
          3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Miserable people, who just want to ruin someone else's pleasure. 'Shut that door' as Larry used to say & the problem would have been solved.
I have to say on my little 3,000mile tour of the West coast in '81, I found the Americans to be the charming, helpful & wonderful people they want to the world to believe they are. So why is it, as TJ said, that they somehow lose it when they travel? Beats me?

Haha! Well, sure back in '81! That was...let me think...a lot of years ago! Truth is, from my world-travel experience, it's only a few that spoil it for the rest of the yanks. Thus, the phase coined back in the 1950s...The Ugly American!

I heading into town now in search of "rare" puros....and a hand-full of extra, stinky sticks!

Looking forward tho reading more of your thoughts on this topic when I return later this evening, hopefully while enjoying a stinky NC on me deck!

Haha, keep us up to date TJ

My wife doesn't mind the smell of puros in general, but one brand she and also independently some other people have commented their dislike of is Diplomaticos.

Say you were inspired by their Star spangled banner to be "Free" enough to smoke your cigar and "Brave" enough to keep doing it even when some obnoxious cnut is trying to repress you.

Just been thinking a bit more about this. I am yet to find someone who doesn't like the smell of cigar smoke. Everyone I know likes it. And I don't mean doesn't mind it, I mean likes it. Including the people who would cry out "You stink!" when I would come back in from smoking a ciggy. A very rude response in itself but somehow presumed acceptable by many.

I too have noticed this, but its the smell of fresh cigar smoke not the smell that's left behind.
