What you did also say is a box of Edmundos. So they will have their own mini environment inside the humidor. Hence why people rotate stock. And do a full everything out stuck check every so often I expect.

No idea how much this can be a factor.

I did wonder how much that matters, I used to rotate cigars from the bottom to the top of the humidor every now and then but never get round to it these days.

Could it perhaps be more to do with temperature than RH? Or rather would a higher RH at higher than desirable temperature cause an increase in humidity?

I'm guessing thats what happened, I keep them in the cupboard under the stairs which is the coolest point in the house but at some point they must've been exposed to a warmer environment.

It's a bit weird. At different temperatures air is capable of supporting more or less humidity. So for the same amount of moisture, a change in temperature changes the RH. The amount of moisture in the air may remain the same. It's about how much the air can support at that temperature. So as the temperature drops, for a fixed amount of moisture in the air, the RH increases. So at 70% drop the temp a few degrees and you might have 80% RH. Check it again in the day when the temp rises, looks ok!

I don't understand how this can affect one or two sticks out of a humidor for example. But it can and does.

I guess not checking your humidor often enough might be a factor? As this moves the air around.

But like others have said if it's a couple of sticks out may not come back or spread one caught.

Thanks for the explanation banos, I check them every 3ish weeks to see how low the Boveda's are getting. If they need rehydrating I use humidifier solution.

The thing most people tend to ignore is that mold spores are pretty much everywhere. Every single cigar ever made will have some spores in them. Its unavoidable. It only grows if the conditions are wrong.

Isolating sticks is pointless in my opinion. Brush the mold off if you want to smoke it. Or throw it away if you dont. Get the conditions right and it wont grow.

Also see people talk about wiping down their humis or tupperdore. No sense in this at all.. as soon as you put your sticks back in you are adding the spores back. Just get the humidity right and the problem wont reoccur.

If a cigar is wet when it’s rolled then it’s stuck in a tube and sealed it’s no surprise they can become mouldy despite the conditions being ideal in your humidor (or storage of choice).

If the cigar was in a wooden box I’d be looking at changing RH, if it was in a tube (or cardboard packaging) I’d be less concerned.

Not to go against the flow here... but if this is just on one stick... and all others are fine... relax a bit. I opened a mag 46 tubos once to find a growth almost identical to that one... brushed it off... put the cap back on... all fine... 2-3 years later!

I have kept all of mine at 69 without issue for years... only change i've ever made is when i tipped most of my stock into a wineador I bought 65's by mistake...


Anyhow, I left my NC's in a locknlock box at 69 and found one of the recent additions had moulded up in its cello - i gave it a fiery death last weekend. All others from the same batch were fine, all others in and out of cello in the box were fine. Worry if its blue/ green/black mould... that needs an antifungal...IMHO
