I wonder what will be taxed to raise revenue as cigarettes are phased out? The exchequer currently gets about £10 billion a year from tobacco tax.

Some say ..... This is why the Tories are doing this now. They know they'll lose the next election. And labour have voted to bring this in anyway. So they'll have to tax the likes of you! Boom.

I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

Believe it or not there is a calculation to establish if the revenue takings on tobacco outweighs the cost to the NHS. I would imagine the NHS cost is getting to a point where it is outstripping the revenue gain.

I think I caught on the radio the other day that the cost was roughly double that now. I thought it seemed a bit of a stretch, but taking into account loss of tax from people dying or leaving work early due to illness (possibly claiming benefits as a result), as well as the direct cost of care/treatment, perhaps it's not far off...

I'd love to see how their creative accounting pans out.

Also despite all the clever calculations, they're also scaring away non-doms that spend a total fortune on services, retail, F&B etc that bolsters vat and other tax collections. What's going to replace that when they all leave 😳
