I wonder what will be taxed to raise revenue as cigarettes are phased out? The exchequer currently gets about £10 billion a year from tobacco tax.

Some say ..... This is why the Tories are doing this now. They know they'll lose the next election. And labour have voted to bring this in anyway. So they'll have to tax the likes of you! Boom.

I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

Believe it or not there is a calculation to establish if the revenue takings on tobacco outweighs the cost to the NHS. I would imagine the NHS cost is getting to a point where it is outstripping the revenue gain.

I think I caught on the radio the other day that the cost was roughly double that now. I thought it seemed a bit of a stretch, but taking into account loss of tax from people dying or leaving work early due to illness (possibly claiming benefits as a result), as well as the direct cost of care/treatment, perhaps it's not far off...

I'd love to see how their creative accounting pans out.
Also despite all the clever calculations, they're also scaring away non-doms that spend a total fortune on services, retail, F&B etc that bolsters vat and other tax collections. What's going to replace that when they all leave 😳
The other side to this is a sudden prohibited product that people can easily buy might push a new market. Making things illegal has worked so well so far…
I'm sure we've not seen the last of this. I just wonder how long it will be before they ban all outdoor smoking.
You would like to think that a smoke-free generation would be enough and draw a line under the whole lot.
As an aside... I wonder what this will mean for cigar prices in the coming decades 🤔 surely they could take a good chunk off the tax on premium cigars... 🙄
At some point, cannabis tax will be inevitable to plug the loss in revenue. At some point, the net tax benefits will outstrip the medical marijuana market benefits that the UK takes a big chunk of (Theresa May's pension fund) At that point it becomes a tasty prospect for any government strapped for cash.
Cigars are doomed. The US has a big enough market to have a say. The UK does not. Stock up whilst you can!
And just like that, it appears this legislation is dead…for not. Read an article in the telegraph which was interesting on how the government was lobbied and effectively threatened with legal action from Big Tobacco.
Aye, an increase in legal age to 21yo might be on hte cards & I don't think many would think that unreasonable. Telling a 30yo he can't buy a cig or cigar was never gonna work,
