  • Bolivar Lonsdale

Hi all, hope the Cigar World is spinning perfectly for you all at the minute, had this Lonsdale last night and thought it was best to write a review up, enjoy.

With a light claro coloured wrapper and smooth, slightly spongy pack this Lonsdale looks well made. It cut and lit well but I found it to be very snug on the draw so I had to cut past the shoulder cap unfortunately.
The draw flavours were of toasty, slightly nutty, sweet tobacco, not bad at all; the finish flavours were of spaghetti carbonara... "He's gone mad!" I hear you say, you might think that but the finish flavours were of spaghetti carbonara because that's what I'd had for dinner. There were absolutely no finish in sight, I could not tell I'd taken a draw after the initial draw flavours had gone. It was if the flavours were leaving my mouth with the smoke; I could almost see the strong Bolivar taste wandering off down the road with the smoke! This for me completely killed the cigar, I got no finish flavours until about 3/4 of the way down until I'd nearly finished when all of a sudden I had a point where I got a rush of that Bolivar taste I was expecting.

The construction appeared fine, with the ash dropping off in 7/8 inch chunks but the majority of the stick was terrible unfortunately. I can't split this up into 1st, 2nd and 3rd thirds as they all tasted the same, with this stick it's the "off" and "on" sections instead.

I think this was been one of the worst sticks I've tried, coming just below the RASS for draw resistance. Due to the horrible experience I have to give this a 3.9 out of 10 sadly.

It did pose two questions though: Is this what people call "plugged"? and could Habanos purposely roll cigars badly to put people off buying them? It really got me wondering as the Lonsdale is quite unpopular atm, maybe Habanos are trying to limit how many they make so they roll them so awfully they put people off buying them? Perhaps, it's just a thought anyway...

Thanks for reading and have a good week guys!
    Cheers,
    Matt

Thinner RG are more likely to have a bad draw so its unlikely to be intentional. If your smoking thinner smokes try storing at a lower RH or dryboxing for a few days before smoking to open it up abit

Nice review. Doubt Habanos would do this intentionally, they have form in disregard for the end customer, if they wanted to cut a good line, they'd do it without having to stuff up the sticks.

Thanks Ross, I'll try that next time I've got a Hoyo Des Dieux that I'm keeping for a while, I really hope it isn't the same, I've heard great things about Des Dieux
and yeah I'm sure they don't mean to do it but it did cross my mind.

Try pairing it with a nice puttanesca this time

Hi Matt, do you know box code/date of production & how it's been stored before u got it?

If I was a roller I could easily miss out a crucial filler leaf on one of the thousands I roll daily without realising, I suspect even with excellent QC it'd never get picked up until the cigar is smoked.

Another tip for a tight draw on the the pre-light is to pop the cigar in the fridge for a few hours. I appreciate that removes the immediacy of that particular cigar but it helps. Perhaps clip a cigar the day before intending to smoke it and check the draw? Mind you, that isn't immediacy either

That's a pretty big shame. The Bolivar Lonsdale is probably my favourite Bolivar of all the ones I've had. They normally rank 95+ for me in terms of ratings and have been good from almost every year (even dreaded 2001).

The plugs are an unfortunate reality but as Chris said, there are various techniques you can use to rectify most of them including and not limited to freezing them, dry boxing them, clipping the edges off, impaling them.
One thing I've actually done to a regular production cigar is smoke it backwards : light the cap of the cigar when you realise it's tight. The only thing you'll have to worry about then is the cigar unravelling. To me, the 3 cigars I've smoked this way had no noticable different other than the first 5 puffs of pure wrapper.

Matt, further to the above advice, Cervantes have a poor reputation for tight/plugged cigars, the Boli Lonsdale & Immensia both prime examples. Combine with the 2001 era & it's easy to find bad examples. I have never figured out why, there are plenty of narrower RG than the Cervantes - which don't seem to suffer as much. My tip is to carry a cocktail stick in your wallet & when reqired stuff it in several times as far as you can, this will ease 90% of poor sticks, especially those plugged around the band area, as the stick will pass that. By improving the draw you will also improve the flav, as poor thin smoke will not give much flav to taste. Finally don't give up on these, get a goodie & as Butters said, they are excellent.

Thanks for the help guys, it seems that these are good sticks I must have just got a bad one; I'll buy another some time and then do a re-review. Hopefully I get a decent one next time
Thanks for all the tips and tricks everyone, appreciate the help. I reckon a cocktail stick should do it come to think of it, I'll carry one in my Xikar sheath thing next time
Unfortunately I don't have the box code but I got it from CGars so it's a reputable source, nothing wrong their end obviously, I just got a bad 'un I suppose.
                    Thanks again,
                    Matt

Tried cocktail sticks in the past ,only trouble is they tend to snap easily
so now I use a wheel spoke should the need arise.

Thank, as ever, for sharing your experience Matt. Always an interesting read.

I can but agree with the others - definitely give these another go, they are exceptional when you get a good one. It is an unfortunate reality with hand-rolled cigars that every now and then we'll get a dud (whether they've missed a leaf, rolled it too tightly, or any number of other potential issues). Thankfully it's not too often we get them these days, no less frustrating when it happens though. [emoji20]

                        Enjoy the next one!

I'll have to make/find something like a cocktail stick that'll do the job without breaking, thanks for the tip Tony
and yeah I'll get another one at some point, it is frustrating when you spend your cash on something and it is an effectively wasted experience
I wish all cigars had the construction of a Padron and the taste of a Por Larranaga, I'd be a happy man then

Anyone tried any of those 898 sticks? I think Partagas and RA make a "varnished" one, whatever that means... Been meaning to get one for a while, I've heard they're good

The RA 8-9-8 is absolutely legendary. Like most legendary cigars, they're rare as hell, too.

Partagas has the 8-9-8 unvarnished (unofficial name) until 2002. Then the 8-9-8 varnished came out. Those are great cigars that don't reflect the Partagas marca. Fantastic young, too.
