Appearance: Oily, rustic Colorado (almost Maduro looking) wrapper with prominent veins. The Diplomaticos band, although my least favourite of all the cuban brand designs, does look as it if actually suits the Piramide shape.
Construction: Solid throughout with just the right amount of ?pinch? at the band point. The pre-light aroma was a delightful aperitif of rich, earthy tobacco. The pre-draw was fine. The smoking-draw was excellent and remained that way throughout the smoke. The burn was true right untill around the band point where I had to make a small adjustment . The ash was hesitantly compact and light-mid grey. Three tap offs. (See pics). One re-touch.
Flavour: Smoothly progressive. The initial flavour was a pleasant mix of leather and soft peppers and the expected Cuban lemony twang of sweetness. (Smoke: Lighter in volumn and without some of the same creaminess in texture as the three other No2's). A third in and the peppers had all but disappeared leaving the leather notes to become much fuller and more bitter but still pleasantly offset by the underlying lemon sweetness. Half way, and with the sweet notes still present, the leathers taste became much earthier ? kidding me into believing the smoke was a lot stronger than it actually was ? and picked up a bit of harshness. By the final third all the harshness had reseeded, but with it, the earthiness had also softened becoming lighter and all a bit ?so what?. Beyond the band the flavour was becoming a bit too tar blurred, and that?s where I left it.
Overall: Not bad, but IMHO best suited as a Herfing cigar as I think it lacks the variety of flavours to really hold the interest of a lone Aficionado over the smoking time. For a supposedly medium to strong smoke I also found it a bit on the mild side, the draw however was very good.
