  • Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Robusto FACTORY SECONDS

This is a pre-review review as I won't be enjoying one of these until the weekend. I love the regular 1990 but the price tag always gets me. When I saw the seconds available in the US I was amazed at the price difference, and after lots of reading there seemed to be absolutely no difference in taste. The reason they're seconds is a few cosmetic blemishes, but to be honest I can't see any.

I knew I'd have to pay import tax and from my experience this would be 50-200%. It turned out to be about 200%, but even with this the sticks came up about ?4 cheaper each than a regular Vinatage 1990 bought here.

They come in an interesting triangle bundle, with no bands except one big pretty one covering them all. Here;s a few sneak peeks of them unpackaged and then sitting nicely in a my humi. Can't wait to try them.

    Stay tuned!

Is that a picture of Peter Griffin on your school desk?

Haha, it's not a school desk, just the best desk ever! It's a large plank of wood on two speakers I've had for about 5 years now and adornes all sorts of graffiti and foul language. It's the perfect size though and couldn't do without it!

How I thought I was going to save one of these for the weekend after waiting weeks for them to arrive I have no idea.

I wont go into detail about the flavour, it was exactly like the 'regular' 1990 that costs a lot more. Performance was actually better than a couple of regulars in fact. I have to admit there were a couple of construction errors and I've never had a robusto of this before (always had the torpedo), so are these things normal?

        1. The cap is really bad. I almost made no cut on one and half the cigar unravelled. I'll have to get some glue to salvage that one. I found another with a slight bigger one but even that was hard to cut. In the future I'm going to have to either pick the small cap off or make a punch, which I'm not a fan of.
        2. The first 20 minutes there was very little smoke on the draw, but tons coming off the stick. A hole appeared in the ash and it was burning from inside. Maybe just a one off, will report on others later.

Otherwise happy with it. Here's a couple of pictures:

          I Second That!

I had the same experience with RP 1990 and 92 seconds - taste as good as the firsts!

From my experience, this is true for most, if not all, non-Cuban seconds. And when I was smoking them, I always went for seconds, bundles, when available.

What seconds of popular cuban and non cubans are available in the UK?

              Not Bloody Likely!

Hmmmm, not familiar with Cuban seconds, but it's unlikely if non-Cuban seconds are available over there. From what I can tell from this forum, it's hard to find non-Cuban "firsts" in the UK! emoticon-cartoon-001.gif
