Exactly. There's a place in France where the pictures on the walls are worth more than Cuba, but the catalogues and coffee table books that are their reference are a bit more sensible in their pricing. Now I couldn't afford even a corner of a Gauguin but I can afford the odd cigar, but I don't really need MRN to tell me what they are because I already know, and I don't need his tasting notes either, because when a cigars in my mouth it's only me that's qualified to say what it tastes like!

Hmmm I don't see the point of creating something which looks to be the definitive cigars smokers encyclopaedia when only a tiny fraction of people will actually be able to see it!

I would however understand if there were different entry levels created, starting with one which the average cigar smoker could afford right up to the edition which comes with that ghastly box!

VTG have you ever seen or read the 1st edition? Seen the quality of the pictures, used it as a reference book? Put cigars against the pics & been able to identify them? Read the text & the extensive tasting notes? I paid ?55 for mine yrs ago when Cgars still had them. We know good copies fetch high prices now. I have spent many, many hrs reading & pouring over mine, to the extent if sold is would be classed as a working copy only. I have just been on a certian Swiss site (for reference only) & found a R&J Romeos Ancient Humidor Replica 2008, containing 50 Romeos 52x 6 3/8" at ?4,358. 50 Stix & a hand made replica cabinent. I would suggest it unlikely anyone on this forum would buy it, even if they had the cash. These are brought by people who never expect to smoke them & re-sell when they think they can make a profit. What is an item really worth? How many of you have cars that you paid ?20K+ for, that loose money every quarter in depreciation, when a car a fraction of that value would get you safely from a to b?


People have brought & prized books highly since the printed word came out. Many books fetching more than their intrinsic value because of the stories told within, the dreams that are weaved, the transporting ot other worlds & lands & to own such a book have always been prized by some.

I will simplify my point and try and be as direct as possible with my thoughts, and I really hope I don't offend anyone with the directness of this statement.


This is a brand new product being sold as an ultra premium piece of publishing... To that end and in fitting with the claims, the manufacturer could have really made a statement by producing an absolute heirloom.

They haven't done this at all, what they have done is valued a set of books a sixth the size of the most well known encyclopaedia and valued it a multiples of the price of even long out of print 30 volume editions. The whole thing is then put in an afterthought of a piece of furniture which is average at best and made from offensively low rent materials given the price.

For this amount of money, I would want a beautifully crafted piece of cabinetry that will still look special in a hundred or more years from now, because at this price it is obviously not about the book's anymore... They could have sold you those books at the quality they are now for less than four figures.

To this end I really honestly believe that the producer is pulling people pants down by selling this piece at this price.

Yes .... the furniture is pretty awful .... the books will go onto shelves and the box and stool into attics and basements.
