First time I've heard of that Simon, never worked in an office environment but always thought it was unfair that smokers used to get breaks but non smokers didn't.

One company I worked for allowed non-smoking staff 'fresh air breaks' in lieu of the smoking breaks that our cigarette addicted colleagues were entitled too. Very fair and equitable. Also, given the number of studies which have shown that productivity increases with occasional short breaks, along with the better morale, it probably worked out quite well for the company. I suspect the ?50m lost earnings has been calculated somewhat crudely, based on little more than average wage x 2 ten minute fag breaks x number of smokers...

Its not all bad news, more people are dying from drug overdoses than ever before. It might gain us some breathing space a while longer

I drink as I work - we don't have coffee or tea breaks, but that's beside the point

Even if we did have coffee breaks and taking into account any other time not doing proper work, everyone would be entitled to those, whereas the fact still remains that a smoker is given an extra say 20 minutes break a day (assuming 10 minutes for one in the morning and another 10 in the afternoon) on top of anything a non-smoker would get

There are of course other ways to have handled it and its not that I am particularly outraged about it or would bother to bring in the same where I work, but as a point of principle I agree with what the council are doing and don't see it as an attack on smokers and don't really see what anyone would have to complain about

Just heard on the radio we are costing our employers 50 million in lost earning by going for a quick smoke break.

    That's what you think.

Smoking breaks will be stubbed out for more than 1,000 employees after a council announced a blanket ban on lighting up in work hours.
Nottinghamshire County Council will discipline workers who are caught smoking at any time during their paid working hours and the rules will apply to any authority-owned buildings, land or vehicles.
A policy document circulated to staff yesterday, and seen by the Post, said staff had "no right to smoke" and the council has a "key role" in promoting better health in Notts.
The ban, which also prohibits the use of e-cigarettes, has been welcomed by health experts but union chiefs say it is a "step too far".
