I have just ordered the molto dolce, and maple street, smoking pipes.com will deliver to the UK. they are a US company who also distribute from Holland to reduce the postage times.

you may have to pay a small customs charge if they pick it up, but if you keep the orders small and sensible they will not bother as its too much hassle to chase you for ?1 in duty.
mine usually takes 10-12 days to arrive by their super saver international shipping, and usually I save upwards of 20% on buying similar in the UK if its available.

hope that helps, and I hope as they are a functional supplier to the UK I'm ok posting my experience on here, please amend if not

I was going to try another bowl tonight until I realised there was a hole in the bottom of my cob :/ Is this caused by user error ?

No, cobs dint last as long as briar. If you have a cheaper model they put some of the clay they line the inside with in the bottom of the pipe. The dare I say more expensive ones have a hardwood plug in the bottom and should last a lot longer

Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment as you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it!

Ahh, thanks Paulie, I didn't know this. I'll have a look and go for some hardwood bottoms next

No problem, you could also do a temp fix on the one you have. smokeyjoe glued a coin to the bottom of his and seemed very happy with the result

check out anything made by the American company Missouri meerschaum, they make fantastic cobs that can last as long as a briar if you treat em right.

they are a bit more expensive than a cheap cob, but mine have lasted me a 2 years so far and they look like they haven't been touched

I decided to pick up something cheaper first, to experiment with

Parker Bent Zulu

I heartily concur on the Missouri Meerschaum cob front. I've just stocked up from Glyn Q. now I know the sad news about his business. They don't ghost, and come in a huge number of shapes and sizes and will happily take a dri-kule basket thingy if you want to smoke less than a full bowl.

I've already experimented with cobs (infact, I have some more on the way) but I wanted to purchase my first 'proper' pipe

Fair play, I've actually got a brumfitt and a Parker bent Zulu, I really like the shape and the way the bowl is canted.

I was going to try a bowl tonight but i'm unsure of how to go about breaking it in. Just about every webpage i've visited offers a different method :/

Not hard to break a pipe in Scooby
My method is to fill the bowl half full for about 6 smokes, them I fill it to three quarter full for another 6 smokes.
