My method is to fill the bowl half full for about 6 smokes, them I fill it to three quarter full for another 6 smokes.
Thanks Tony, I'll give this a try Do you have to smoke a little slower than you would do normally, whilst breaking in?

Just smoke it slowly wether your breaking in a new pipe or not, other wise if you smoke it fast the tobacco will burn hot and taste harsh
and your likely to get tongue burn .

yup fill halfway and smoke slowly for a good few smokes then fill all the way up just as tony stated. its easy to be too eager, smoke wet and hot and people get put off, make sure your in a good relaxed place, no demands on your time and sit back to enjoy

some put a dilute honey around the bowl as it will turn to carbon quite quickly and start the Cake off, I have tried it but didn't notice any improvement.

more important IMHO is the rest period, let the pipe dry for 48hrs after smoking before hitting it again, and only clean when cooled, it will take care of itself

Carter Hall as in Tam Lin (most notably by Fairport Convention) - seems totally appropriate it's also a pipe tobacco...
