Just en-route home as it happens, but have been to the Black Bull, though sadly not this time. Very good tip though.

I don't know where in the Lakes you are Simon but if you're within reach of Coniston give the Black Bull a try as they have their own brewery out back.

I do enjoy a good dark beer! A little late to the party, admittedly, but I did have a wonderful one up here in the Lakes last night. A pint of Robinson's Unicorn Black slipped down very nicely - a cracking stout.
Some excellent recommendations throughout this thread - big fan of quite a few, always pleased to see Hook Norton Double Stout on a pump at home.

Can not recommend these two highly enough.
The only reason I won't buy again is cost but worth trying at least once

I've never really been a Stout or Porter drinker, always stuck to the ales.
That was until I stepped foot in the Scottish Real Ale Shop, where there were over 200 different Ales/Stouts/Porters. I can stongly recommend Midnight Sun, a 'rich, dark and spicy porter' and also Top Out, a 'smoked porter'.
