  • Rum - The pound for pound (sipping) debate!

    Good evening Gents and Gals!

None of you know as I'm a newbie that I also have a passion for Rums, in particular Anejo or golden rums. I have a few premium rums (generally around the ?100-?150 mark - my pallet isn't good enough to pay more than this) but don't drink these on a regular basis, only when I feel like treating myself.

However, back to the point I have a go-to that is my preferred daily sipping rum in a nice crystal glass would have to be Mount Gay Extra Old (?34 in UK Supermarkets)

I would like to know of other people's preferred rum tipples for enjoying with a nice stogie, I really think Rum compliments the cigar better than Whisky (blasphemy for a Scot some might say!)

Pound for pound, at ?34 Mount Gay is a very smooth and enjoyable sipping rum and therefore my contender!

I'm a whisky drinker but here goes.

        El Dorado 15

Not only the best rum, but the best spirit I have drunk at any price range..... No joke.

I like various rums. Some quite a bit more expensive than others but s nice cheap one for me is cockspur.

For the price, great rum. Works well warmed or over ice - both ways. Kinda like a VS cognac but a tad too sweet. Very good for the price.
Havana Club 15 is good and pretty cheap where I get it (Cuba )
Just got some Brugal 1888. That's very good as well when warmed or frozen.
Hell - even Bacardi age statements puts out some pretty smooth rums that aren't too sweet.
You mentioned Mount Gay Xtra Old which is great for the price.
Diplomatic rum is probably one of my favourites for the price alone.
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera is a cheap, fine alternative to cognacs when pairing with cigars. Hell, any Ron Zacapas are great!

Might not be your thing, but I'm v partial to Sailor Jerry
I agree Mount Gay is a v good sipping rum. And even Ron Zacapa is a good sipper.

                          With Marc all the way.

The Club Havana range on a whole are a pretty good bunch of sipping rums. The reserva of the 7 being my choice for the prices. The masters one is lovely but a bit expensive.

Got some Belize 8yo rum from Selfridges that's beautiful as well. Like a spicy Christmas pudding

I've been experimenting recently with Fum and I'm taken on it.

For spiced I can't find anything to beat Old J Spiced, it is a beauty!

For sipping I've been impressed with the MG XO and Appletons XO too but the finest was a bottle of Ron Santiago de Cuba 12 Year! Impressive.

For or general drinking/mixing Duppy Share blend is marvellous.
