Anywho, I was reading a bit online and found a recommendation for a cheap whiskey that LIDL sells - Queen Margot 5 year old blended scotch. It won an International Spirit Challenge Gold award last year. For less than ?13 for a 700ml bottle, I thought it would be worth buying. If I didn't like it, I could always drink it with a mixer. My cousin and I had a dram each this evening in our Glencraig glasses and I have to say that I would definitely recommend it to other beginners! Nice nose with toffee and vanilla aromas and quite sweet tasting. Didn't give the harshness when swallowing that I experienced with a lot of the other whiskies. Rather, it was a very smooth finish and I would definitely think it was a much more expensive whiskey if I didn't know how much it cost.
As a bonus, the bottle/label doesn't look too bad, unlike other supermarket's own brand whiskies! Even if you were a snob and didn't want people to see the bottle, you could always put it in a decanter!

Excuse the poor picture - it was quite dark, so I had to brighten it up before uploading.
