  • Great cheap blended scotch

So I'm very new to the world of whiskey (only been trying whiskey neat for the past week or 2) and I've been wanting to find a few whiskies that I really like before investing in a few good quality bottles. I've been trying a few decent whiskeys that my cousin had (Bushmills 16, The Dalmore, Lagavulin and Glenfiddich 18) and a few miniatures that I came across in Supermarkets.

Anywho, I was reading a bit online and found a recommendation for a cheap whiskey that LIDL sells - Queen Margot 5 year old blended scotch. It won an International Spirit Challenge Gold award last year. For less than ?13 for a 700ml bottle, I thought it would be worth buying. If I didn't like it, I could always drink it with a mixer. My cousin and I had a dram each this evening in our Glencraig glasses and I have to say that I would definitely recommend it to other beginners! Nice nose with toffee and vanilla aromas and quite sweet tasting. Didn't give the harshness when swallowing that I experienced with a lot of the other whiskies. Rather, it was a very smooth finish and I would definitely think it was a much more expensive whiskey if I didn't know how much it cost.

As a bonus, the bottle/label doesn't look too bad, unlike other supermarket's own brand whiskies! Even if you were a snob and didn't want people to see the bottle, you could always put it in a decanter!

Excuse the poor picture - it was quite dark, so I had to brighten it up before uploading.

A good cheap whisky is a must in any collection IMO. I look out at Morrison's they tend to have a malt in at around ?20 now and then!

        Ledaig springs to mind.

I took it with a small splash of spring water - same way I've been trying all my whiskies.

Ledaig is a very under rated single malt, in my opinion. I really like its light, peaty flavours and Id pay a lot more for it so its a bonus that it comes in at ?18 a bottle. I haven't tried the 10 year old but would like to.

You can't go wrong with a blend.

Best blend for me is Monkey Shoulder. Made from 3 great malts.
                Balvenie
                Glenfiddich
                Kininvie.

                Beautiful.

The first night I tried whiskey neat (about 2 weekends ago), I tried 4 or 5 different whiskies and Monkey Shoulder was the one I liked most. It was so smooth. It was a 50ml miniature bottle that I had picked up in Asda for ?3. I will definitely be picking up a big bottle for the collection!

Think the OP was talking about blended whisky (grain + malt spirit) as opposed to blended malt whisky but I know MS is pretty decently priced, never tried it as I rarely drink non aged whiskies. Does sound intriguing!

I think you can go wrong with blended, a lot of crap out there. Blended malts are great though. Have had a go blending my own once or twice and you can get some great results.

I tasted an Irish blended whisky at a whisky festival and was surprised at how nice it was- worth seeking it if you like clean sharp flavours : Wild Geese Untamed.

This looks good. Well worth a try I'm sure. Is it readily available or is it difficult to come by? It isn't one I have came across before (not saying much considering I've only been looking at them the past couple of weeks). What sort of price would it normally be?

I regretted not buying a bottle at the festival to be honest, its currently sold out on Masters of Malt at only ?18 its s bargain.

Since the increase in single malts, I think blends have gotten a bit of a bad rap lately. Yes, there are some nasty 'paint remover' type blends out there, but there are also some that will knock your socks off. And this is an area where supermarkets do pretty well, with even the likes of the Coop having some very good - and well priced - blends.

Cigars and whisky... both fun but expensive pleasures!

                            You can say that again[emoji3]
If you had to give up one, which would it be?

For me it would be the cigar. Whisky is far too important!
