  • Coffee machines...

A bit of help please from coffee experts....

My Gaggia classic has just stopped working! seems to be blocked! turns on and warms up, hums like it used to when you turn on the coffee switch but nothing comes out, steamer works fine. I've striped and clean around the holder etc. but still nothing..... looks like it's blocked inside, not sure if I should take it apart or just buy another...

Recommendations for a new espresso machine would be much appreciated in case I go that way! I'm not a heavy user though and maybe drink one or two cappuccinos at the weekend only.... I've been looking through old threads but a bit of modern advise would be great thanks, tried a Dolce gusto Circolo machine a friend had but not to my taste! I need the steamer anyway....

I know it' bad form to steal text from elsewhere on the internet. But here is the best rundown I can find of having a crack at this common problem on Gaggia's:

"From cold, open the steam knob right up, switch the machine on and then hit the brew switch, water should start to drip/flow from the grouphead - ps : you should be able to hear the pump working.
I had a similar problem that i thought was an airlock but it turned out to be a bit of scale in my solenoid valve, there's small valve bolted onto the right hand side of the head unit with two allen headed bolts, remove this and you may find an obstruction in either of the water ports at the bottom of the unit, you can dismantle these valves quite easy so go ahead and give it a try - remember and unplug your machine first though. The black plastic surround is the coil that activates the solenoid valve - this may be at fault also."

Based on the dolce comment, are you ruling out nespresso?

I went through 2 manual machines and used my warranty with Dingles to buy a Nespresso machine... Haven't looked back since.

I also have one for the team at work that used to make at least 20 cups a day and its 2 years old... Works like a charm!

With the code of capsules coming down, I think you should consider it.

Hope this isn't as lesbian as buying a gas BBQ!

        Smoke on!

To a certain extent after a certain price, the machine delivers much the same output, and it then becomes more about the quality of coffee. For ease of use and quality, i have long been a fan of nespresso. I have been using them since about 2002 and havent looked back. Their range of coffees consistently evolves, and now you can get a pretty diverse selection of compatible capsules from other coffee producers, its even better. You can have an integrated steamer, or a separate, as far as i know....

as you can tell i am a fan. I still own and use a good old cafetiere from time to time mind you.

I've tried the nespresso and Dolce Gusto but always return to the trusty stove top Bialetti. Takes a few minutes to cook but it's consistant and easy to use.

Yep, may have to consider one. I have a nice grinder and do prefer to grind fresh beans but I don't really drink that much so it would be a logical way to go. when I get a chance to have a closer look at the problem with this one then with some luck it may well be an easy fix.

Quite like the look of the Silvia V4 now though...

We have a Jura, has been used constantly since it arrived last year and has stood up the usage really well.

I keep meaning to buy an aeropress.
                              And
I have always wanted a bean to cup. What makes these Juras so good? Is it just that they are high quality?

I hear Sage make unbelievable quality stuff too.
