Great catching there Johnny. Nice to see your assistance was duly rewarded. No fishing for me until 23rd Nov, when I'll chasing the pike again.

A few shots from my latest trip to France. Fishing nights only, ended with thirteen fish to 41lb 4oz.
This was a work party to build new fishing platforms on my friends lake.

Indeed sad but true today. I used to go at 04:00 bike to the pond on my own & fish all day no worries, wouldn't recommend that today. of course our gear wasn't worth much & I carried a big knife!

since the river is 5 minutes walk you never know who's about these days, and being on his own with all the gear in my opinion not safe.

Tackle theft during the night while asleep is a problem for carp anglers now. I use a PIR alarm to guard my rods, reels etc.
I think you are wise Tony. A young kid fishing alone is vulnerable to tackle theft.

It is great to see kids getting into fishing. My son will not have a thing to do with it.

Cheers Simon, I'm happy to catch anything generally whereas he seems obsessed with pike (or anything else with teeth for that matter).

That little spot we fish on is just before a sharp bend which helps to keep the cyclists speeds down and quite coincidentally at the bottom of the steps of the best pub in the area [emoji6]

Budgie, congrat's on taking your son at his word & buying all the gear & making his day. I am impressed you did so well. 7yo is a great age to start fishing, as it happens so was I, still at it 48yrs later! Still having my share of blanks but it's a hobby that can really broaden their childhood, gets them off the couch & interested in nature & the world around them. A few tips that I used with my daughter (see her first fish attached): keep the trips short to start with, reasonable weather, go at his pace, do the unhooking to start with but he should be able to manage a disgorger after being shown a few times at his age. Once he can bait up, cast (or flick out on a canal) strike play the fish in, all you'd have to still do is land them until he can manage the smaller fish himself. Then you can use a second rod to have a spin ect. Remember you're going for him to start with, once he has the confidence you can both fish. The bigger he gets the further he'll happy with you straying down the towpath. Cautions: These days canals are great for the fish & you have done well to find some where he can just catch. They aren't bothered about size at that stage, just catching; must admit my daughter often caught the biggest of the day & that builds self esteem as well, not many areas when kids can beat their parents at anything. But towpaths attract mountain bikers that whizz past really fast & there's not much room, look out for them & try to keep the tow path clear, have a brother in law that has had more than one pole damaged form a bike going straight over it before he could ship it out. Sometimes the bigger boys come around & get bored after a while & trouble can start from throwing stones in to worse. Should be fine whilst your still with him but one day he'll want to go on his own. Anyway keep encouraging him but let him dictate the pace & don't be too keen to get him into pike or carp; let him learn his trade catch all species before choosing to specialize.

I have to say I wasn't expecting to ever post in here, but a fortnight ago my 7 y.o. son, totally out of the blue, announced that he wanted to go fishing.

Fast forward to pay day and an hour on popular angling supplies website meant that we had a load of brand spanking new gear on the way.

Now, it had been around 23 years since I've last fished so after a crash research session online we went fishing on the local canal last Sunday....

.... And amazingly we didn't blank!

A total of 7 fish caught over 4 hrs (3 for him, 4 for me - he caught the biggest!) and he wants to go again this weekend.

Apparently there's a good number of perch and Jack pike in the canal so I may get a lure rod to see if I can pick a few up.
