#9 fly rod and line, 6lb flurocarbon leader to #8 hook.
Chum mixer pre glued to hooks.... Find the water Lily patches and blankets of floating weed, drop the biscuit into the gaps and hold On tight when something gets sucked in.
Did a bit of carping on the fly last summmer , a fella gets down the lake every year great fun on really light tackle a real challenge and great sport landing them
For me most enjoyable is a tossup between spinning and quiver tip.
Now a custom 9' spinner with a push in quiver could be my go anywhere rod. It would have to compromise in areas but it's got me thinking.... hmm 4 piece....
Shit, I'm gonna end up spending money on something like this now...
A 9' spinning rod is THE most versatile rod On the planet! Spinning for Pike, Perch, Sea Bass, Chubb, Trout and Salmon. Stalking Carp, and close in float or ledgering for anything that swims in British waters.
And the most enjoyable way to fish ambling along a river or stalking a margin , light tackle lovely , most of the nicest fish I've caught have come from the margin , gotta keep fishing simple and enjoy it .

If you want to just dabble get a decent spinning rod for an amble in winter for pike , and the best and most enjoyable way to catch carp is surface fishing in the summer , both very reasonable set ups and a good introduction into fishing
Just 'caught' (like the pun? Huh huh?) up with this thread again, been sea fishing for the past 25 years, never known of a sea fishing rod license. Only piers normally charge a small fee for each rod.
Where have you done your fishing Si? What sort of species are you catching?
And most importantly, recipes.
Carp fishing can be done on a 'cheap' budget. But it still cost a fair amount to get all the required kit together.
It is easy to get into Wigan. There are literally hundreds, and probably thousands, of carp fisheries in England now.
