If dogs were not used on the syndicate for such a big estate a lot of birds would go unnoticed
then you need the dogs to find the shot birds in thick cover they certainly earn their keep and more.

Never been involved in sports with gundogs . We used them due to their ability to cover ground ..and scenting capabilities

it's such a pleasure seeing them working all by the whistle and by hand signals they never seem to get tired
quick drink from a puddle and off they go again.

All i have to say is phwoar! Enjoy!Originally posted by Simon-JG-hr View PostBloody good dog. Bet the handler was dead chuffed.
Was loading in a bit of a gale earlier this week. Perfect for partridge, those that made it over the guns were real screamers and had a bit of curl on them too. Thankfully it was a damn good team of guns that day - lesser teams would have never made the bag, even with the keeper's super-human efforts to get enough birds over them. (Not an issue on a nice little syndicate or family shoot, but fairly important for that keeper with a boss/accountant to keep happy).
Off to Wales tomorrow evening (this evening, as I type this). Have been invited on a shoot up in the valleys just outside Welshpool by someone who wants me to sell some days next year. I offered to head up in February to have a look around at what he's got and I was told not to be silly... "You'll only appreciate how good this shoot is if you have a go yourself... I've got a peg on the 7th, come and join us." Obviously I didn't need asking twice. Stuck between Vaynor Park and Powis Castle it should be a belter. Stocked up on some manlier cartridges than usual too. Hopefully I'll get a couple of photos.

Very true being a gun and waiting for birds to come over on a day like today is a lot colder
being a beater you were actualy sweating today hard going through thick brambles
to flush woodcock, last drive of the day woodcock was flying so fast plus the wind behind it folded dead mid air the wind must of carried it 90 yards down
from where it got shot, after 15 minutes one of the springers came back with it not sure who was more chuffed the gun that shot it or the dog finaly finding it.

Our shoot was utterly battered by this storm today... No matter which drive the wind was violently against them! Glad to have just been doing the lunch today! Long day out What was reading as a warm 10-12 degrees but feeling much much colder. Buffeted by the weather, chilled by the high wind, while pheasants scream past on it, laughing at you ... Not always the most fun!!
