We had a quiet day... Boundary bashing, hellish winds, frankly bugger all about! Few corking ducks shot off one pond, not by me(!), and that was about it. Bloomin good walk round mind you- cobwebs gone, and a few mince pies worked off!

Good to be out in the sticks today after the festive few days at home, weather made a nice change too nice down my neck of the woods
breezy and mild. Today was a let day 12 guns came to shoot woodcock.
We did 8 drives today in total 5 in the morning before lunch, then 3 in the afternoon
the morning started very slow after 2 drives only 2 woodcock in the game cart, they just weren't about
thirds drive onwards through very thick cover with the help of the springers and cocker's we managed to start flushing them out over towards the waiting guns
by lunch time there was 12 woodcock in the bag guns looked more happy and out came the cigars monticristo's N04s
game keeper looked more happy too by lunch time.
The last 3 drives produced another 6 woodcock that came down plus 2 duck that came over to land in a near pond
total for today was 18 woodcock 2 duck.
Happy guns happy gamekeeper nackerd dogs and beaters but a good laugh and banter, will sleep like a baby tonight.
Roll on Saturday pheasant shoot by syndicate guns.

Am out again tomorrow... Hopefully a nice day, dry and windy. We're walking up most drives rather than the usually driven... so should be smaller bag but loads of fun!

Cracking day ... Amidst these stormy days we got a dry one. As its Boxing Day the woodcock were on, and my my did they put on a show. After two drives we'd barely seen a pheasant, except for some very high n handsome ones pretty much playing with us on the wind. The woodcocks were also on great form. With an enlarged shooting line of ten guns, over our usual 6-8, everyone had the opportunity to shootwoodcock through the day. Sadly no Right and lefts today, but some really tough shooting that asked a lot of the line. At the end of the day we had some real gusts which closed the day with a couple of dramatic flushes, from good drives. Our beaters did a cracking job, and thankfully agreed with us that our shotcount which registed at up 7:1 was mostly a reflection on the quality of the birds.... And of course the beating!

I elected to be a walking gun on most drives, to try and work off yesterdays overdraft of trifle, mince pies, roasted everything etc.... And i hope to sleep like a log this evening! Hope you all had fun doing whatever it is you got up to!

Looking to boxing day for a pheasant shoot, and the one day we're allowed to ping the woodcock...!
No joy I'm afraid. The few days I've been able to get hold of have all been weekends. Currently in negotiations to take over some sporting rights for next season - so hopefully we can do something entirely to our own UKCF schedule next season!

Have fun on Boxing Day! I must admit to having a much desired second day off in succession tomorrow. [emoji4]

P.S. Merry Christmas to all in the UKCF shooting community (and all the others too... Haha!)

Snow + shooting = heaven. The big kid in me loves snow. And i kinda feel shooting should be done in the cold. I'd settle for a heavy frost, but snow is the best!

You sound like my son simon loves to see snow this time of year.
Being colder last year there was more woodcock being shot compared to this year
realy hard work for the beaters this year on woodcock days trying to find and flush them
got a woodcock let day on the 28 December.

Agreed about the weather! The keepers have certainly earnt their money this year if they've stopped the birds from wandering. I've seen two good frosts all season. TWO! And that's being at shoots four to six times a week since mid-October.

I'm hoping for a real cold snap - shooting up in Yorkshire on January 2nd and really hoping for a snowy day. My second of what will likely be just three days shooting this year. (Excepting a bit of walked-up). Love it when it snows on a shoot day (or, more accurately, the night before).
