Worth noting that if you bring in over your personal allowance (50 cigars) then you pay duty on the full amount, not just the difference.

In terms of importation of tobacco products from overseas and the tax/duty position: my understanding is that the only way this can discharged is by any such monies being paid by the sender (As Deano identified) and not one that can be done this end. Of course there will be stories of 'I know a chap that paid this and that' at the point of entry, but this is an exception, not the rule. HMC/UKBA are also concious of the retail element re profit that is missing from such imports too.

I was under the impression that if cigars imported from overseas were declared as such, then customs would charge you relevant tax/duty.

I have had packages declared as cigars and have paid the relevant fees. I have no idea how they work out how much tax/duty is though

Thinking about it, it proberbly involves two agencies.

HM Customs & Excise (Duty)

Inland Revenue (VAT)
